<Part 1>
전화에 대한 표현이 많다.
A: 안받아? 괜찮아 어서 받아.
>> Aren't you going to get(*answer/pick up) that? It's OK. Go ahead, answer it.
*Go ahead: 먼저 하란 뜻
B: 여보세요? 잠시만요. 미안한데, 통화 좀 하고 올게.
>> Hello? Could you hold on (for) a second(minute)? I'm sorry but I need(have) to take this (+ call).
*Hold on: 기다리라는 말을 할 때 많이 쓴다.
*Need to / Have to 대신 Got to 도 많이 사용한다.
*참고로 전화를 받을 때만 "take this (+call)"을 써야 한다. 내가 전화를 걸어야 할 때는 "make a phone call"을 써야 한다.
A: 어 그래, 어서 하고 와.
>> Yeah, go ahead. Take your time.
B: 삼촌이었어.
>> That was my uncle.
A: 삼촌이랑 친해?
>> Are you close with your uncle?
*be close with + 누구: 누구랑 친하다. (이게 to보다 사용 빈도가 좀 더 높다)
*be close to:
B: 우리 아버지가 돌아가시고 나서부터 가끔 전화를 하시더라구.
>> Ever since my father passed away, he has been calling me from time to time(every now and then).
*Ever는 좀 더 강조하는 느낌이다. 여기선 since를 강조.
*sometimes는 완료 시제랑은 잘 안 어울린다. 완료 시제에서 "가끔"이라는 말을 사용하려면 위 표현들을 사용하는 게 좋다.
그렇게 친한 건 아닌데 요즘은 1주일에 한 두 번 정도 통화 해.
>> We're not that(very) close, (but these days) I talk to my uncle on the phone once or twice a week.
>> We're not that(very) close, (but these days) We talk on the phone once or twice a week.
*영어에서 여기서 나온 통화는 바로 윗 문장에서 통화한다는 말과 완전히 다르다. 여기서는 "전화상으로 얘기를 한다"는 일반적인 이야기이다. 이 때는 "Talk to someone on the phone"을 쓴다.
*전화를 걸다: dial a number (call someone도 쓴다)
*(누구)한테 전화가 오다: I got a call from a(my) friend.
*연락을 하다: Call my friend. (캐주얼한 표현)
Get in touch with my friend. (연락이 꽤 없었던 것을 내포하고 있다.)
>> I got in touch with one of my friends.
(무조건 contact라고하면 안된다. 이건 되게 형식적인 말이다. Contact a customer service, contact please, contact your district office 개인적인 연락을 의미하지 않는다. 절차에 어울린다. Contact my friend는 정말 이례적이고 어색하다.)
<Part 2>
걔한테서 어디냐고 문자가 왔어.
내가 거의 다 도착했다고 문자를 보냈어.
- 통화 중이야: be on the phone.
나 지금 통화중이야.
>> I'm on the phone right now.
나 통화중이었어.
>> I was on the phone.
걔 지금 통화중인 것 같아.
>> I think she's on the phone right now. - 연락을 유지하다 / 연락을 계속 하다 / 연락을 계속 주고 받다: stay in touch / keep in touch.
연락을 한 번 한다고 이 표현을 쓰지는 않는다. 계속 해야 한다.
우리 아직도 연락 주고 받아.
>> We still keep(stay) in touch.
내가 돌아오고 나서도 아직도 연락을 해.
>> We've been staying(keeping) in touch even after I came back. (staying/keeping 생략 가능)
너 걔량 아직도 연락 하니?
>> Do you (still) keep in touch?
>> Do you (still) stay in touch with her? - 연락이 끊기다: lose touch
>> We were very close, but after we graduated, we (kind of) lost touch. - 뭔가를 주고 받을 때 사진 등을 같이 보내는 경우, with를 쓴다.
>> I sent him a text(an email) + with a picture.
>> I got an email from him + with a picture.
>> He sent me an email + with a picture.
>> I got an email from my bank with an attachment.
>> They sent me an email + with a document.
*첨부파일: attachment - 뭔가 주고 받을 때 그 내용을 같이 말하는 경우, V-ing로 연결한다.
거의 다 도착했다고 문자를 보냈어.
>> I sent her a message(text) + saying (that) + I'm almost there.
>> I sent her a message(text) + telling her (that) + I was almost there.
걔가 이번 주말에는 바쁘다고 답장이 왔어.
>> I got a reply saying (that) he's busy this weekend.
>> He sent a reply saying (that) he was busy this weekend.
나는 친구한테 내가 어디에 있었냐는 문자를 받았어요.
>> I got a text from a friend asking (me) where I was.
>> A friend sent me a text(message) this morning asking (me) where I was.
Yes or No question이면 "asking if"를 써야 한다.
친구가 바쁘냐고 문자를 보냈어요.
>> A friend sent me a text asking if I was busy.
>> I got a text from a friend asking if I was busy.
내가 걔한테 이번 주말에 같이 영화보러 가고 싶냐고 문자를 보냈어.
>> I sent him a text(message) asking if he wants to go (to) see a movie (together) this weekend.
내일 아침에 회의가 있다는 걸 잊지 말라는 문자를 받았어요. //remind로 한 단어로 처리할 수 있다.
>> I got a text from work reminding me about the meeting tomorrow morning.
나는 그들로부터 내가 준비해야 할 것을 알려주는 메일을 받았어.
>> I got an email from them letting me know what I need to prepare.
나는 그들로부터 정확한 시간과 장소를 알려주는 메일을 받았어.
>> I got an email from them letting me know the exact time and location.
걔한테서 어디냐고 (묻는) 전화가 왔어.
>> I got a call from him(her) asking (me) where I was.
친구한테서 뭐하고 있냐고 (묻는) 전화가 왔어.
>> I got a call from a friend asking (me) what I was doing.
위에서 말한 with와 V-ing를 합쳐서 사용할 수도 있다.
난 내 친구로부터 그녀를 아냐고 묻는 여자 사진을 받았어.
>> I got a message from my friend with a picture of a(some) girl asking (me) if I knew who she was.
내가 걔한테 어떤 기사 링크를 문자로 보내주면서 한번 읽어보라고 그랬어.
>> I sent him a message with a link to an article saying(telling him) that he should read it.
