처음에는, 애초에, 먼저, ~하는게 처음이다

무엇이 처음이라는 말을 쓸 때가 있다. 이를테면,

 

처음에는 좀 어색했어.

애초에 내가 실수를 했어.

걔를 고등학교 때 처음 만났어.

내가 먼저 말을 꺼냈어.

난 혼자서 해외 여행을 하는 게 처음이야.

 

이 때 First를 생각할 것이다. 그런데 이걸 어떻게 사용해야 할까? 이게 의외로 어렵다.

1. 처음에는: At first
   문장 맨 앞이나 맨 뒤에 넣는다.
   - 처음에는 좀 어색했어.
   >> At first it was a little awkward.
   >> It was a little awkward at first.
   
   - 처음에는 별로 관심이 안갔었어.
   >> I wasn't very interested at first.
   >> At first, I wasn't very interested.
   
   - 처음에는 좀 어려웠는데 익숙해지고 나니까 괜찮았어.
   >> At first it was a little hard(difficult) but it was OK once(after) I got used to it.
   >> It was a little difficult at first, but it was OK after I got used to it.
   
   
2. 애초에: In the first place / To begin with
   - 애초에 오해가 좀 있었던 것 같아요.
   >> I think there was some misunderstanding in the first place.
   >> I think there was some misunderstanding to begin with.
   - 애초에 내가 실수를 했어.
   >> I made some mistake(s) in the first place.
   >> I made some mistake(s) to begin with.
   - 애초에 내가 확인을 제대로 안 했어.
   >> I didn't check properly in the first place.
   >> I didn't check properly to begin with.
   - 내가 애초에 말을 꺼내지 말았어야 했어.
   >> I shouldn't have brought it up in the first place.
   >> I shouldn't have mentioned it in the first place.
   >> I shouldn't have brought it up to begin with.
   >> I shouldn't have mentioned it to begin with.
   *shouldn't have p.p: ~하지 말았어야 했다.
   
   
3. 먼저: First
   - 걔가 먼저 말을 꺼냈어.
   >> He brought it up first.
   >> He mentioned it first.
   - 걔가 날 먼저 때렸어.
   >> He hit me first.
   - 내가 먼저 물어봤잖아.
   >> I asked (you) first.
   
   
4. 처음으로: For the first time- 
   그녀를 처음으로 직접 만났어.
   >> I met her in person + for the first time.
   >> I met her for the first time in person.
   I first met her in person. 이라고 하면 우선/일단 걔를 직접 만났어. 처럼 들리게 돼서 안 된다.
   하지만 We first met in high school. 처럼 first를 쓰는 건 괜찮다.
   - 걔네 사귀기 시작하고 나서 처음으로 다퉜어.
   >> They had an argument(fight) for the first time since they started going out. (dating / seeing each other)
   >> They had their first argument(fight) since they started going out.
   - 나 운전면허증을 따고 나서 처음으로 혼자서 운전했어.
   >> I drove by myself for the first time since I got my driver's license.
   
   같이 배워야 할 표현이 있다.
   ~을 하는 것이 처음이다: Be + <one's> + first time + ing / Be the first time + <Full sentence>
   이 2가지 표현은, 뜻은 비슷하지만 문맥에 따른 뉘앙스가 다르다.
   이 때, 미묘한 차이 때문에 to V를 쓰지 않고 ing를 쓴다. Ing를 쓰면 해당 시점의 이야기지만, to V는 그 이전 시점에서 얘기를 하는 것이다.
   It was my first time + going on stage. //무대에 서 있는 상황
   It was my first time + to go on stage. //앞으로 무대에 설 일이 있는 상황 - 어색하다
   my를 the로 바꾸면, Ing와 to V를 신경쓰지 않아도 된다.
   It's the first time + I'm traveling by myself.
   그런데 이걸 미래에 대해서 얘기할 때, 2개 문장 전부에 미래형을 쓰는 게 아니라 꼭 한쪽 문장에만 미래를 쓴다.
   It's the first time I'm going to drive by myself.
   It's going to the first time I drive by myself.
