"걔는 그러고도 남아" 영어로

말뿐인 친구가 있다고 해 보자. 뭔가를 한다고 해도 금방 포기하는 친구다.

그런 친구를 어떻게 표현할 수 있을까?

• I'm not (at all) surprised. >> 전혀 놀랍지 않다.
• That's very typical of him/her. >> 그(녀)의 전형적인(평소) 모습이다.

그리고 이 표현을 많이 쓴다. 누가 무엇을 하는것에 대해서 전혀 놀랍지 않을 때.

I'd expect no less of(from) + (someone/something)

>> someone/something은 그러고도 남지

 

예문1

A: My dog, Jasper, he totally destroyed my sofa.

B: How old is Jasper?

A: He's 4 months old.

B: Well, then I'm not (at all) surprised. That's quite typical of a 4-month-puppy(dog).

그러면 충분히 그럴만 해.

Then, I'd expect no less (of a puppy that age). >> 그 나이대 강쥐는 그러고도 남지

 

예문2

A: Did you see the new Fincher film? It's so good. I think it's the best movie I've seen in the last couple of years.

B: No, I haven't, but I'd expect no less from David Fincher.

안 봤는데 데이비드 핀처라면 (그렇게 좋은 영화를 만드는 것이) 놀랍지는 않다.

*여기선 typical of David Fincher로 쓰면 안 된다. 그의 평소 모습이 아니라 그가 만든 영화에 대한 얘기이기 때문.

 

예문3

A: Did you guys drink a lot last night?

B: Well, I didn't. I barely had half a bottle, but Kim had 3 bottles.

A: Kim? 3 bottles? I'd expect no less of her.

김이 3병? 걔한텐 기본이지.(놀랍지도 않아)
